Who Am I?
I was born in Tijuana, Mexico I am the 3rd of 5 boys from a blended family. It has been a long ride that has gotten me to the steps of High Tech High. It was a road that began in Tijuana, Mexico. My mother and father were living in Mexico when I was an infant and times were very difficult between. My older brother Luis was 6 and I had just turned 1 year old when we moved to the United States,
My parents were looking for a better way of life for my brother and I. When we arrived in the United States in 2003 we didn’t have a place to stay but my dad had a uncle in Ramona California who he ask if we could stay with them until my dad saved some money to rent a house for us. We stayed with my them for around 5 months, my dad was finally able to save enough money to rent a place in Ramona. My mother tells me that it had no furniture and my brother Luis and had the same room. I don't remember the neighborhood but it was a decent multicultural neighborhood that was peaceful and a good start for them. Slowly my father was working and saving money and little by little my parents had enough money to buy furniture for our apartment. We lived in Ramona for a year and then my parents were no longer able to get along and decide to divorce in 2005. My mother, Luis and I were left to provide for ourselves. I was going through a difficult time in my life and did not understand what divorce means or what it would signify in my life all I knew is that I really missed my Dad. We had no place to go and my mother had little options so she began to work two shifts and had a good friend of hers help her out with a place to stay and she babysat us. We stayed for a year with my mom’s friend and she started working and she got us a little apartment in National City California. It was a ghetto neighborhood, I didn’t go outside as much because my Mom was afraid of something happening to me. We only had one room which the three of us slept in. I started going to kindergarden and I didn't know any english at all, it wasn’t difficult to communicate with my teacher and my peers because it was a mostly a Latino school. They sent me to a class where they helped me how to learn english. In 2007, my Mom met a man that I also consider a father figure and he had 2 sons. We became a family of four (4) overnight and my mom got remarried. Things began to change for my family we were now 6 and we moved to a bigger place in Eastlake, California. I liked the neighborhood and it was a much nicer environment. I was able to go outside and play I made new friends and it was much better than when I lived in National City. I started becoming involved in sports because my new Dad believed that we should be active and we played everything from basketball to soccer. Things were really changing for us we had a stable home and went from low income to the middle class overnight. I loved my new brother and we were having fun but best of all my english was improving. In 2009 we moved to a even bigger house, we had pool and plenty of space for me and my brothers to play. Me and my brothers walked to school everyday, we were really happy with the new house we had. In 2010 my dad lost his job and we had to move to Vista California. We started to attend a new school that was in Vista, I was now fluent in english. I had to go to classes to improve my english even more, this meant that instead of going to my regular classes I had a different schedule than everyone else. Sometimes I had to miss fun projects because I was in an other class improving my english, I sometimes felt like I didn’t belong in that school because of my Ethnicity and race. While everyone was talking about the cool projects they had done in class, sometimes they would ask me what I did in project and I would respond nothing and I sometimes wished I would do anything to be in those classes with my friends. Over the years I started to understand more about race and came comfortable talking about it because I had family that were white, and we would get along well. The house we had was small and the neighborhood was mostly hispanic. We lived in Vista for about 4 years while my Dad was attending college. We moved to San Marcos where we have a apartment. I started going to High Tech Middle where I met all my new friends and learned a lot. I am currently going to High tech High North county and I am learning a lot more.
